Small notes on walking, weather and old maps.

The river path after rain

The lower path floods for a day or two each autumn. The upper one is longer but dry, and the view over the bend is worth the extra twenty minutes.

Reading survey maps from the 1920s

Contour intervals were wider then, and field boundaries were drawn by hand. Comparing them with today's satellite images shows how many hedgerows are gone.

Notes on a cheap barometer

It lags real pressure changes by about an hour, which is fine for deciding whether to take a coat.
